Biology is the scientific study of life: its processes, complexity and incredible diversity. The Department of Biology at California State University, Fresno offers diversified undergraduate and graduate education that spans the breadth of modern Biology - from the inner workings of cells to the structure of whole ecosystems.

"There is no “technology” more powerful than biology. With four letters in the DNA code making up the 64 three-letter words that give us proteins, all the diversity of nature came into being through adaptation and evolution. From cyanobacteria to the Three-spined stickleback, from dinosaurs to humans, those creatures that fail to adapt fall, and in their wake, new species and new worlds are formed.
The Department of Biology at Fresno State is a vibrant group of faculty members investigating the molecular mechanisms of cellular processes, delving into the intricacies of microorganisms and their impact on diseases, embracing computational biology methods, promoting effective science communication, studying the ecology of the Sierra Nevada forests and watersheds, and exploring the evolution of life through molecular adaptation. In the Biology Program at Fresno State, our curriculum will take you on a journey from the micro-level studies of protein/gene expression and cell signaling to the macro-level insights of ecosystem preservation and restoration, including climate change mitigation strategies. With this knowledge, we believe you can—and will—make the world a better place."
