Teaching Interests:
Dr. Lewis' teaching interests are varied. His regular teaching duties include Natural
Disasters, Critical Thinking in the Natural Sciences, Geophysics, Global Tectonics,
and Remote Sensing. He has also taught Structural Geology, Sedimentology, and Basin
Analysis. He teaches one course each year for the Smittcamp Famly Honors College.
He served as Program Coordinator for the South Pacific Semester Program during the
Spring 2002 semester, and taught Global Tectonics, Geology of New Zealand, and Field
Methods in New Zealand and Australia. He currently serves on the University Personnel
Committee, the Graduate Curriculum Sub-Committee, and on the ad hoc Student Success
Task Force.
Research Interests:
Dr. Lewis' research has focused on the structural and tectonic development of continental
margins, mostly in the circum-Pacific region. He has led oceanographic research expeditions
to the Philippines, the South China margin, Taiwan, Alaska, southern Chile, and to
offshore California. He has served as Chief Scientist on a cruise of the International
Ocean Drilling Program vessel JOIDES RESOLUTION to Southern Chile. He has served on
science advisory committees for the MARGINS Program, the Ocean Drilling Program,
