Scholarships
Available Scholarships for Students Under the College of Science and Mathematics
Below are some scholarship programs for students majoring in one of the degree programs under the College of Science and Mathematics.
General
Carl E. Levin Science and Math
Awarded to students pursuing a degree in Natural Science.
Clay Science Education
Awarded to students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics who are preparing
to be secondary Life Sciences or Physical Science teachers. Preference is given to
ethnically underrepresented students.
Downing Science Scholarship
$2000 scholarship to be awarded to entering senior undergraduate student in each department
of the College of Science and Mathematics who is selected by the department as the
outstanding academic scholar based on academic record and achievement through the
junior year.
Ibrahim Abou-Ghorran
Student must be enrolled in natural sciences, demonstrate financial need and a student
in good standing.
Jason Fulton Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student pursuing a degree within the College
of Science and Mathematics with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Preference is given
to students with disabilities and those who show interest in Biology, Chemistry, Earth
and Environmental Sciences and/or Mathematics.
Mark T. Kuncir Scholarship
A $2,000 scholarship shall be awarded annually to qualified students who are a veteran
or a member of the United States military. Preference will be given to students studying
geology or science and math. Applicants must be in their sophomore year or higher
and be in good academic standing.
Milton J. Lindner Memorial Scholarship
A $1,200 scholarship to benefit any deserving undergraduate/graduate student pursuing
a course of study in the sciences under the auspice of the California State University,
Fresno, College of Science and Mathematics.
Neva W. Hollister
Awarded to upper-division students in the School of Natural Sciences.
S.C.O.P. Latino Scholarship
A scholarship has been made available by the Science Careers Opportunity Program (S.C.O.P.),
to students who are members of S.C.O.P. Preference is given to Chicano/Latino Pre-Health
students.
Department Scholarships
Biology
Doris F. Falk Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to undergraduate students majoring in a biological science degree offered
by the Department of Biology who will be graduating with a bachelor's degree the semester
the scholarship is awarded, and has the highest overall GPA, which must be at least
a minimum of 3.9, of any graduating biology student the semester the scholarship is
awarded.
Floyd L. R. Burks Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to deserving and in need students enrolled in pre-medical courses.
Fly Fishers for Conservation Scholarship
Awarded to students in pursuit of studies in Biology, who demonstrate an interest
in a research area benefiting Central California cold-water trout streams, and must
demonstrate the motivation and desire to achieve a graduate degree within the College
of Science and Mathematics.
George Van Vleet Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Elin Van Vleet and awarded annually to students majoring in Biology.
Gina Arce Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate the motivation
and desire to achieve a biology degree within the College of Science and Mathematics.
Peter James and Edna Louise Grilione Memorial Environmental Biology Scholarship
Awarded to students enrolled in the College of Science and Mathematics who have a
personal interest in pursuing studies in environmental biology. Preference shall be
given to individuals who demonstrate creative potential in the discipline and who
creatively and actively pursue studies in environmental biology.
Howard P. Kubo, M.D. Scholarship
Pre-medical scholarship awarded to students for outstanding achievement in the Biomedical
Sciences
Lewis and Virginia Eaton Scholarship
Pre-Medical scholarship awarded to students preparing for a career in medicine.
Lilian D. Wells Scholarship
Awarded to deserving Botany or Biology students with a demonstrated financial need.
Students are to be selected by the Chair of the Department of Biology.
Lorraine Wiley Scholarship
Awarded to students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate the motivation
and desire to achieve a biology degree within the College of Science and Mathematics.
Outstanding Graduating Biology Student Award
Awarded to graduate students based upon a high level of academic achievement with
significant extracurricular endeavors contributing to the field of biology in general,
and to the department in particular.
Patricia A. Gillies Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to junior or senior biology students with a GPA of 3.5 or better who have
an interest in entomology. Preference will be given to students who also show a strong
interest in Hispanic cultures.
Ralph McCoy Award in Botany Scholarship
Established by Beta Beta Beta Biology Club, the award goes to an outstanding senior
planning to complete graduate work in Botany. Selection of the recipient is made by
Botany faculty members.
Russell T. Bell Scholarship
Awarded to a senior or graduate Biology student majoring in Limnology.
The Schiff Family Scholarship
Awarded to junior and senior level undergraduate students who are enrolled on a full-time
basis in the College of Science and Mathematics. First priority will be given to those
students majoring in pre-medicine.
Chemistry
Professor Kenneth W. Chan Scholarship
Awarded to students planning to major in Chemistry. Preference given to freshman and
sophomore students having demonstrated strong promise in the field of, or for the
support of chemistry research, or other experimental chemistry activities for students.
Stanley M. and Frances C. Ziegler Physical Chemistry Scholarship
Awarded to chemistry majors studying physical chemistry.
Earth and Environmental Sciences
Dana Geology
$300 is awarded to a senior or graduate student in the Department of Geology. Scholarship
is non-renewable.
Ken Schmidt Hydrogeology Scholarship
Awarded to a deserving student pursuing studies in Earth and Environmental Science,
and who demonstrates an interest in groundwater. Student must have a minimum cumulative
GPA of 3.2 and demonstrate motivation and desire to obtain a graduate degree in Geology
within the College of Science and Mathematics.
Patagonia Scholarship
Two full-ride scholarships shall be awarded to qualified students who are incoming
freshmen and demonstrate intent to major in Environmental Sciences. Preference will
be given to applicants who also have demonstrated an interest in African American
or Native American cultures. This scholarship shall cover annual tuition, on-campus
community style university housing, meal plan, and a book stipend.
Frederick Dale Trauger Endowment Scholarship
Scholarships for students majoring in earth and/or environmental sciences, one or
more such student(s) demonstrating academic achievement and/or potential. Preference
shall be given to junior or senior level students.
Norbert W. Larsen Scholarship
To support geology student study and research scholarships. Priority will be given
to students transferring from or graduates of Reedley College.
Mathematics
Professor Frank Morris Memorial Scholarship
$1,000 scholarship for students majoring in mathematics.
Physics
John R. Dews Physics Research
Awarded to part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate students with a cumulative
minimum GPA of at least 3.0 earned over the last one (1) year of academic instruction,
and demonstrated strong interest and ability in physics.
Jean S. Hirayama Scholarship
Awarded to students with a strong dedication to the field of physics and who possess
the qualities that exemplified the life of Jean S. Hirayama.
Ward and Oma Miles Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to students of senior standing who are planning to major in the field of physical
science and with an interest in atomic energy. The scholarship shall be awarded on
the basis of financial need and educational promise.
Harry Burbridge in Physics
Awarded to students who have completed their sophomore year or, one (1) semester at
California State University, Fresno after transferring from another institution. The
scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need, educational promise and an
interest in the science of Physics as a career.
Cheunjit Katkanant Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Physics with a minimum cumulative GPA of
3.2.
Improving the Image of Science in our Society
This scholarship is given to an incoming freshman who is pursuing a bachelor's degree
in Physics.
Hands-On Networking in Industry
Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student majoring in Physics who demonstrates
financial need, and has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
Physics Millennium
Awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in Physics who demonstrates financial
need and has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
James T. Shockley Scholarship
Awarded to junior or senior undergraduate or graduate students majoring in physics
at California State University, Fresno. Students must demonstrate financial need,
have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and commitment to continue education toward
either a secondary school teaching credential in the sciences or graduate school with
the intent of teaching at the collegiate level.
Psychology
Pickford Memorial Fund-Psychology
Scholarships available to Psychology students in memory of W.O. Pickford, Vivian I.
Pickford, and William R. Pickford, their son.
Dr. Edward V. Tenney Award
This scholarship is presented at the end of each Spring semester to an outstanding
senior male and female Psychology major as determined by rules and conditions of the
Psychology Department.
Roger L. Bailey Memorial
Awarded to graduate students in Psychology or Counseling.
Lee J. Cronback Psychology
Student must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Fresno State and
have a cumulative minimum GPA of a least 3.5 earned over the last two (2) years of
academic instruction. Students must demonstrate a strong interest and ability in research
involving psychological measurement methods used in psychological research.
