How to Use A Linux Template to Create Your Own VM Instance
Note: Here we use a Fedora template to showcase the whole process; you will use the similar process to create your own instances with other (Linux/UNIX/Windows) templates provided by our Keck Cloudstack Cloud.
1. Firstly, login to the CloudStack web portal by using your CloudStack login credentials.
If you don't have one, contact the CloudStack admin to create an account for you.
2. After successfully login into the CloudStack, click on the Instances on top left
vertical menu.
3. After clicking on the Instances button, below screen will appear. Then add a new
Instance by clicking on the Add Instance button on the top right of the screen.
4. Now, Select a Zone and Template as shown in the below screen. Then click on the
next button provided at the bottom of the screen ( marked as red colour rectangle)
5. In the below screen, click on the Community tab, to see all the available templates
on the CloudStack. Now, select the desired template from the given list. We have selected
the Fedora 18 (64 bit) as an example in this document. Then click on the next button
given in the bottom of the screen.
6. Select the size of the RAM as per the Domain. Based on Domain like student, faculty
or Researcher. CloudStack will provide the different configuration based on the domain
of the user logged in. After selecting the RAM size as per the requirement, click
on the next button given in the bottom of the screen.
7. Now, it's time to select the hard drive of the VM instance. In this menu, CloudStack
will provide the hard drives of different sizes. Now choose a hard drive from the
below list and click on the next button.
8. Now select a pre-existing network, if you have any or create a new network shown
in the next screen below and then click next button to move further.
9. If you don't have any network earlier or you are a new user. Then you need to create
a network for your VM instance as shown in the below screen. Provide a Name and select
a type of Network from the drop-down menu and click on the next button.
10. This screen is the final step of the new VM instance configuration setting. Provide
a name and group name (optional) and then click on the Launch VM button to create
a new VM instance. In the below screen you can change the configuration by click any
of the edit button or go back to the desired screen by using the previous button,
given at the bottom of every screen.
11. After clicking on the Launch VM button the screen will appear like the below screen.
This means that Cloudstack is in process of creating a new instance for you and allocating
the resources to your VM as per the configuration you have selected. It will take
few minutes to complete the process of VM creation.
12. Once the new VM instance creation process is completed. New VM instance will be
visible on your screen.
13. Now click on the display name of the new instance to see the details of the newly
created VM Instance.
14. Below screen shows the details of the newly created VM like state, OS type etc.
User can change the various information based on the domain.
15. Below in the screen to do following operation :
a. Stop the VM Instance (Button in brown rectangular box).
b. Reboot Instance (Button in blue rectangular box).
c. Change the password (Button in green rectangular box).
d. Invoke the VNC console (Button in red rectangular box).
16. The below screen will comes up, once you click on the VNC console button ( as
shown in the previous button in red rectangular box)
17. Below is the login screen for the Fedora 18 Linux VM instance. The default password
for admin is "Fresn0State". In the password, its numeric zero i.e. '0' instead of
'O'.
18. After entering the admin password. You will be able to see the home screen of
the fedora 18 Linux. Now you are ready to use the VM instance for your work.
